Catch Garbo Dreams in the last public performance

Hello Garbo Dreamer!

The last performance of Garbo Dreams at The Red Room was phenomenal. The energy from the audience was spectacular. So much so that they asked me to perform the piece again on May 17th.

Garbo Dreams is intended for private audiences and the last show was an exception, but I was inclined to say yes again for a few reasons. One especially big reason is that so many of you requested a weekend show -- well, you got it...your Saturday night entertainment on May 17th!

The second is that creating an evening of entertainment has always been the goal and when coupled with a live jazz trio we accomplished that feat.  It was so much fun in March that we wanted to offer that experience to more guests. You'll have Garbo Dreams first. Second, jazz and elegant drinks, and perhaps some dancing.

Maybe we'll see you on May 17th?

"Garbo Dreams" and Michael Arenella come together on March 11th to recreate that magic.

"Garbo Dreams": 8-9pm -- A theatrical tribute to the icon

Michael Arenella: 9:15-10:45pm -- Jazz-age music

Michaella Arenella is the bandleader and founder of the Dreamland Orchestra, the world's premier Jazz-Age dance orchestra, steeped in the hot-dance band tradition of the 1920s and early 1930s. Their size ranges from a full dance orchestra to smaller incarnations. They play their "Hot-and-Sweet" music anywhere that fine and eclectic tastes meet. (www.dreamlandorchestra.com)

Greta Garbo: A modern woman before her time: Vintage Hollywood

2/6/2014

Garbo, the silver screen star, chose independence and flexibility in her private and romantic life before most people could grasp the concept. She was post-gay, post-feminist -- a woman who defied labels and made her choices based on her needs and desires.

Live Stream Event: See Miss G. Online

On Wednesday, September 18th at 6pm we are live streaming "Garbo Dreams" from a secret location in NYC.

How are we doing this?

Well, a hidden camera, of course!?

Yes, the most famous recluse of all time would not speak to you in public, so we put a hidden camera in her apartment. How naughty of us!

At 6pm click on this link: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/garbo-dreams

Now for truth time: Why are we going to all this trouble?
Garbo did not like to talk to the public. In fact, she refused to give interviews, even after her retirement. She shunned the public spotlight in part to feed her image. The more she ran, the more people followed her. Even in the 80s, "Garbo sightings" were commonplace. Up until her death people vied for private access to the "divine one."

Today's celebrity culture is rife with over-sharing of one's private life and a constant barrage of blatant invasions of privacy. Would Garbo have survived in such an environment? It's my opinion that she wouldn't have bothered.

But what if Miss Garbo bother and was as famous today as she was in the 1930s? No doubt she would have had her phone hacked into, had her picture taken by every stranger she passes...as she shunned the spotlight the tactics would grow more desperate, just as they had in the 1930s. The difference is that today there are no boundaries when it comes to celebrity culture. Is it that far off to think that if she was alive today she would have a desperate fan plant a hidden camera in her home? Listen in on the most difficult moment in their life? Not as a empathetic listener, but as a voyeuristic observer. Watching, and perhaps learning something.

Experience that invasion on September 18th.

Garbo Star Quality: Being in Your Body

8/21/2013

We're continuing our discussion on what made Garbo so damned appealing.

There were thousands of actresses in Hollywood and around the world trying to break into movies. What made Garbo so special.

In the two stills here -- from Gosta Berling -- Garbo inhabits her emotion within her body. The two are fused.  She is three dimensional and almost comes off the screen. She pops because her character is fully human -- embodied.  She doesn't hold back her sensuality and that reads clearly on film....and is completely alluring.

What do you see?

The Garbo Dreams team is off to the rolling hills of Vermont this coming weekend to perform for the Kopkind and the Center for Independent Documentary Filmmakers Retreat. It is described as:  “radical relaxation: great films, great food and deep discussions on the art, politics and the plain fun of filmmaking"... and now Miss Garbo.

We are especially proud to bring cinema history to the people currently making cinema history.

Garbo had a face that was said to "only come once in a century."

What was it exactly about her that moved people so much?

For the next few weeks we'll be posting a still from her early movies  and asking you to tell us what you see. Garbo continues to move audiences -- there must be something about her!

Garbo's Standoff with Louis B. Mayer: Vintage Hollywood

7/17/2013

Garbo stood up to MGM studio chief Louis B. Mayer in a battle of wills to obtain a fair contract.  She didn't call herself a feminist, but was one of silver screen's pioneers in gender equity.
